Vector Control inspectors survey Bermuda year round, with heightened inspections during the summer season. Inspectors map-out different neighbourhoods in their designated districts and visit each house (walk around the outside of your property or home) to check for mosquito breeding.
The Mosquito Control Regulations under the Public Health Act state that “Every person must maintain their property free from mosquitos.” The Vector Control Section of Environmental Health works diligently to monitor mosquito distribution and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
Vector Control does not use sprays to decrease or eliminate mosquito populations. Instead, the inspectors use an egg trap (ovitrap), which is an ideal environment for the mosquito to lay her eggs. The eggs are then found, brought to the Department of Health’s lab and destroyed.
